Baking Soda Biscuits
These flaky and tender biscuits make use of expired baking soda, ensuring food safety and reducing food waste.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon expired baking soda
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, expired baking soda, sugar, and salt.
Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour in the buttermilk and stir until the dough starts to come together.
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it forms a cohesive ball.
Roll out the dough to a 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits using a round biscuit cutter.
Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.
